Rep. Cyrier announces re-election campaign

State Representative John P. Cyrier has announced his intention to seek re-election to the Texas House for District 17, which includes Bastrop, Caldwell, Lee, Gonzales and Karnes counties. First elected in 2015, Cyrier is Chairman of the House Committee on Culture, Recreation, and Tourism.

“This past legislative session was a big win for all Texans, and I am running for re-election to keep building on these successes,” said Cyrier. “We passed a major overhaul of the school finance system that raises teacher salaries and provides a significant increase in funding for public education. We also provided property tax relief and put responsible, long-term constraints on property taxes.”

As a co-author of House Bill 3, Rep. Cyrier helped to pass $4.5 billion for transformational new investments in public education, $2 billion to increase teacher compensation, and $200 million for school safety improvements. He also worked to honor the promises made to our retired educators by co-sponsoring Senate Bill 12, which increases the state’s contribution to the Teacher Retirement System and provides retirees with a supplemental payment.

As Chairman of the committee charged with overseeing state parks, historical sites, culture and tourism, Cyrier led the effort to pass SB 26 and SJR 24 through the Texas House. This legislation places a constitutional amendment, Proposition 5, on the ballot this November to secure a reliable, long-term funding source for our state parks and historical sites by dedicating existing state revenue for their care and maintenance.

“For too long, state lawmakers have entrusted the hardworking leaders and personnel of our state parks system with a very important job but not given them the resources they need to accomplish it. This amendment will change that and provide the funding system necessary to preserve these natural treasures for future generations,” said Cyrier.
