The annual Relay for Life of Gonzales County is slated to kick off 4 p.m. May 4, at Confederate Square.

The American Cancer Society hosted event dubbed “May the Cure Be with You” will see teams walk the square from 4-10 p.m. to raise funds for cancer research.

Honorees for this year’s event include Stephen “Bubba” Pirkle, Mable Richter and Pat Ferrell.

In addition to the relay itself, there will be food, music, a silent auction and other activities including lighting of dedicated luminaria and a “fight back” ceremony to celebrate lives and raise awareness.

The event is requesting all vehicles be cleared from the square by 7 a.m. on May 4. In the event of inclement weather, please refer to the group’s Facebook page for information.

As of print date, the event has raised $18,501.75 for cancer research and patient care programs provided by the American Cancer Society. Megan Zella is the top participant so far, with $9,885.72 raised. Her team Louie’s Lights of Hope – GVEC have contributed 14,574.88.
