Refugio Romo

Refugio Romo, 87, of Gonzales, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2020. He was born Oct. 5, 1932 in Sabinas, Mexico, the son of Jose and Marcellina Guerra Romo. Refugio was a retired ranch hand and worked with cattle and broke horses for many years.

He was a true cowboy.

He loved the outdoors, after his retirement he kept busy with yard work, gardening and tending to his beautiful rose garden, and gave roses to everyone who came to visit.

He became quite the expert with a lasso, often showing his family and friends tricks which he had learned throughout the years. He was a former member of Mission Baptist Church and a current member of Two Rivers Bible Church in Gonzales. Most of all he treasured time spent with his family.

He is survived by his daughters: Alma Garza of Gonzales, Irma Arizpe of Gonzales, Norma Calvillo and husband of Pasadena, Texas, and Laura Romo of Gonzales. Also surviving are nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife: Esther Arzola Romo; five sisters and one brother.

Visitation will be held Friday, Oct. 9, 2020 from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, 2020 at Seydler-Hill Funeral Home with Reverend Jesse Elizondo officiating. Interment will follow at the St. James Cemetery. Pallbearers include: Fred Garza, Lauro Arizpe, Mario Calvillo Jr., Luis Arizpe, Kristian Calvillo and Eric Garza.

Due to current CDC, State and local mandates, protective measures regarding social distancing, limited attendance capacity and the use of personal protective masks will be required for the visitation, funeral service and graveside burial rite.
