Idle thoughts on a Tuesday morning:

Spent last weekend in Goliad attending the annual Professional Bull Riding event at the Fairgrounds. Bo Davis and crew lined up a great show with plenty of good bull riders, and a huge throng turned out to watch. A lot of Gonzales people made the trip to Goliad for the weekend, and they were not disappointed as some of the best bull riding to hit central Texas in a long time took place. Kudos to Bo Davis and his team for putting on a great show for the fans.

I received a call from VFW Commandant Dick Kuenzler the other day. He wanted me to come out to the post so he could show me the latest addition to the wall of the building. Tuesday morning I went out to have a cup of coffee with Dick, and he took me over to the latest piece of art hanging on the wall.
It was a picture of the seven men from Gonzales who lost their lives in the Vietnam war. All seven men are now memorialized with photos of themselves, but the really moving thing is the etching of their names as they appear on the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington DC. The next time you are out that way, be sure to check it out. It is a moving tribute to the local men who made the supreme sacrifice for their country.

You have to give it up for Joe Solansky, the president of the Friends of Lake Wood Association. Joe appeared before the Commissioner’s Court on Monday and made a spectacular presentation to the county on how the county might be able to help the Lake be restored. Hopefully, the commissioner’s liked his presentation and will give his proposal serious consideration.

My good friend Karen Jacobs asked me to mention that the local Book Club is going to be rejoining in the near future. If you are interested in reading a good book and discussing with like-minded individuals, give Karen a call at the Long Branch to learn more.

Can you believe August is already half over? Where has the summer gone? Heck, I don’t think I even took time to enjoy spring let alone this summer!

Just put this on your radar: It is time for the community of Gonzales to seriously consider upgrading its athletic facilities. A community of this size deserves better and we all need to be accountable for the years of not improving the existing facilities. It will require a bond issue to make it a reality, but I think it’s time we had a serious discussion about what is best for our student athletes.

If anyone is looking for a part-time job, the Inquirer is looking for a part-time delivery driver to work Wednesday evenings. The position is simple: drive the company van to Taylor, Texas to pick up the paper and then deliver it to stops in Waelder, Luling, Belmont and Nixon. It’s about 7 hours of work per week. If interested, please fill out an application at the Inquirer office at 622 St. Paul Street.

There is one fact blowing my mind: this week I have begun to make plans for volunteering at the annual Come and Take It festival. Yes, it is only seven weeks away and organizers are trying to make sure all of the events and committees are covered. I have signed up to be a judge at the T-Bone cookoff and will be calling Bingo a couple of times during the festival. I can’t believe it’s almost upon us once again.

Rumor has it that the old Pawn Shop building is being sold to a group who wants to turn the upstairs into private apartments and then lease out the downstairs for retail. It would be nice to have something in that building again.
