Orvan L. Muelker

Orvan L. Muelker, a registered cattle breeder in the Cost area, was born March 1932 and passed away on Friday, Oct. 13, at the age of 85 years. Orvan was the youngest of three children to Otto and Dora Bush Muelker.

Orvan was among the first cattleman to use artificial inseminate with cattle in Texas. His efforts began in 1969 when crossing the current Muelker Farms herd with the Limousine breed. After traveling to Italy in 1984 learning about Piedmontese cattle Muelker Farms were the first to import the Piedmontese breed to the US. Orvan and Junie were instrumental in the formation of the Piedmontese Association of the United States (PAUS) and served as the first president.

As with many a Texas farm and ranch; chickens, sheep and hogs were raised along with cattle, horses and later, with his daughter Kathy, parakeets and exotic birds.

Among Orvan’s many interests was gardening – flowers were always in the garden and roses the flower that he brought to his first love, Junie almost every day! In their younger years, they enjoyed dancing across many dancehalls in South, Texas.

He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 55 years, his parents, brother Denver, nephews Michael & James, great nephew Cody.

Orvan is survived by his loving and caring friend, Mary Ann Brzozowski, his sister Dorothy Lee Zmeskal, his children Kay (Jimmy Bundick), Dwight (Sandy Wetz), Kathy (Perry Winegeart); Grandchildren: Gretchen (James Hilt), Garrett Muelker, Blake Petrek (Leslie), Rhonda (Tony Brooks), Monica (Calvin Salois), Mandy Kasper; 13 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; numerous family members and friends.

Visitation will be held at Seydler Hill funeral home on Monday, Oct. 16, from 5-7 p.m. with graveside services to follow on Tuesday, Oct. 17, at 10 a.m. at OSO Cemetery in Cost, Texas with Kenny Hyden officiating. Pall bearers for the graveside services are Garrett Muelker, Blake Petrek, James Hilt, Roger Schultz, Dean McMahan, Ron Renken, Ken Haptman, and Gary Muelker.

The family would like to extend many thanks to the wonderful staff of The Texan Nursing home, Dr Hisey, Dr. Ryan, and the wonderful staff of Cima Hospice.
