Olga Mary Schumann, 90, of Gonzales, passed away Wednesday, March 8. Olga was born June 24, 1926 in Fayette County to Richard and Olga Grauke Wilke. She married Robert Frank Schumann on November 20, 1945 in Gonzales. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church.

Olga was raised in the Waelder and Fayette County area. She attended the Stieren country school and worked hard tending to the needs of the livestock and working in the fields of the family farm. She was one of ten children born to the family so the work was shared and so were the fun times playing in the creek and attending dances whenever the opportunity presented itself. She loved to dance and enjoyed a close-knit family. Olga married at age 19 and she and her husband Robert lived on the family home place. She raised two boys as a hardworking stay at home mom until she accepted a job working in the Gonzales High School cafeteria. She worked for the school from 1973 to 1981 and she worked for a period of time in her sister’s Modern Service Laundry in Gonzales. Olga remained a hard working woman throughout her life, never shying away from good day’s work. She lived an example of her faith and cared deeply for the needs of others. Olga took her need to serve others into the nursing home where she joyfully worked to help others to the best of her ability even though she was a resident herself. Olga was gentle and loving but fiercely opinionated. She loved family and she always had food prepared for company. Olga Mary Schumann may be likened to the words of William Shakespeare, “Though she be but little, she is fierce!” fierce in the manner she worked, fierce in the manner she loved family and others and certainly fierce in her faith and love of God.

Olga is survived by her son, Travis Schumann of Gonzales, her brother, Walter Wilke of Cuero and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, son, Bobby Schumann, five sisters and three brothers.

A catholic burial rite will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 10 in Seydler-Hill Funeral Home with Deacon Terry Brennan officiating. Interment will follow in the Gonzales City Cemetery on College Street. Pallbearers: Jay Tinsley, Melvin Grauke, Raymond Schumann, Pat Davis, Kenneth Flessner and Dale Schneider. The family will receive friends from 9-10 a.m. prior to the service. Memorials may be made to the Gonzales VFW Ladies Auxiliary or the Catholic Daughters of America, Fr. Pete Roebrocks Court Bo. 2140. Services are under the care and direction of Seydler-Hill Funeral Home.
