Nixon intersection lights finally live

After years of delays, the traffic signal at the intersection of U.S. Highway 87 and State Highway 80 in Nixon is finally live and operational. What should have been a routine two-step upgrade, ended up taking around three and a half years to complete and featured multiple contractors.

“The previous contractor on the road, my understanding is that (Texas Department of Transportation) TxDOT had to pull their bond,” Nixon City Manager Harold Rice said. “I guess it was just because they weren’t doing their work in a timely manner.”

Once the first contractor was terminated, construction on the project halted for approximately six months and went back up for bids with TxDOT. The contractor that followed had to replace significant portions of the previous contractor’s work.

In a statement on Facebook, the Nixon Police Department urged citizens to use “extreme caution within the preliminary activation days.”
