Mustangs split games in home tournament

NIXON — The Nixon-Smiley Mustangs and Lady Mustangs hosted a round-robin style tournament last weekend, with both teams splitting victories in their respective brackets. The Lady Mustangs were recognized for taking second behind Yorktown.

On the boys side, Marion placed first while Navarro took second.

Navarro 42, Nixon-Smiley 26

The Mustangs opened the tournament with a 42-26 loss against the Navarro Panthers. Leading the boys in scoring was Zach Perez with 12 points followed by Jesse Riojas with eight points. Ruben Bomer, Brayden Martinez and Jayden Brassell each had two points.

Nixon-Smiley 51, Natalia 31

Nixon-Smiley then beat Natalia by 20 in a 51-31 victory. Perez led the team again in scoring, this time with 16 points. Riojas added 14 points. Benito Perez and Brayden Martinez each had six points while Santos Pompa had four points and Jayden Brassell and Edgar Ochoa had three points each.

Marion 55, Nixon-Smiley 33

The Mustangs ended their tournament bid with a 22-point loss against the eventual tournament winners, the Marion Bulldogs. Perez led scoring with 14 points followed by Riojas with six, Ochoa with fie, Perez and Pompa with three each and Dusty Mejia with two points.

The boys team are currently 5-10 overall. They travel to take on McMullen County this Friday before traveling to Nordheim for a non-district game on Tuesday, Jan. 7.
