Mustangs rout rivals, inch closer to playoffs

NIXON — All it took was one big quarter for the Nixon-Smiley Mustangs to knock off their rivals, the Poth Pirates, 34-7. Both teams were tied at 7 headed to the fourth before Nixon-Smiley rattled off 27 straight points to move to 2-2 in District 15-3AD2.

Colby Newman contributed three touchdowns to the scoreboard, with runs of 18 yards, 12 yards and 13 yards going the distance. Joey Mendez had a 59-yard touchdown run and 14 seconds later a 38-yard interception return for a touchdown.

On offense, Newman threw 3-of-8 for 50 yards. He rushed 23 times for 139 yards and those three touchdowns. Mendez ran 26 times for 206 yards and a score. He also caught a ball for three yards. Daniel Rodriguez had a reception for 42 yards.

Defensively, Mendez, along with his interception return for a touchdown, had a share of a sack as well as five tackles and two assisted tackles. Rodrigo Acevedo had 2.5 sacks and Jason Yell forced a fumble while also getting 1.5 sacks.

The Mustangs are now third in the district behind Dilley (4-0) and Stockdale (3-1). The Mustangs can clinch a playoff spot with a win against Stockdale on the road. They play Friday, with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m.
