Mustangs named to all-district team

NIXON — Several Nixon-Smiley athletes were named to the District 27-3A all-district team.

Xavier Arias was named district newcomer of the year after his stellar performance for the Mustangs during district play. The freshman pitcher/infielder went 6-4 in the season with one save, striking out 79 batters, walking 16 and hitting seven batters. He allowed 51 hits and 11 earned runs, ending the season with a 1.20 ERA.

At the plate, Arias had a 0.413 batting average, finishing the season out with 33 hits, 10 doubles, two triples, two home runs with 13 stolen bases and 25 RBIs.

Named to the first-team all-district are centerfielder Colby Newman, infielder Devin Hester, pitcher Ricky Flores and catcher Sean Villanueva. Infielder Jason Yell was named to the second team.

Newman had a 0.470 batting average, finishing the season with 31 hits, 35 runs and 37 stolen bases. Hester had a .347 batting average with 26 hits and 22 RBIs. Villanueva had 20 hits on a .339 batting average and 16 RBIs.

Outfielder Chris Brown and infielder Santos Pompa were honorably mentioned.

The Mustangs finished district with an 8-6 record, good for fourth place. Their season ended in the bi-district round to Tidehaven. They graduate Yell and Newman.
