Mustangs head to playoffs with 2 straight wins

Nixon-Smiley needed to win out for a chance at postseason play and after knocking off Schulenburg 6-0 on Friday, April 20, then Universal City Randolph 10-0 on Tuesday, April 24, the Mustangs are now on their way to the playoffs.

Xavier Arias pitched a seven-inning, complete game shutout against the Schulenburg Shorthorns on Friday, April 20. Arias struck out seven batters, allowing four hits, four walks and two hit batters.
Colby Newman and Devin Hester both had two hits in the game, with Newman going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and a run and Hester going 2-for-4 with a double, two runs, one RBI and a stolen base. Jason Yell, Ricky Flores and Chris Brown each added a hit, with Brown coming away with an RBI.

Nixon-Smiley 10, UC Randolph 0
It took six innings to get there, but the Nixon-Smiley Mustangs ended their District 27-3A with a much-needed 10-0 victory over UC Randolph, clinching a playoff berth with their 8-6 record.
Ricky Flores pitched all six innings, allowing just one hit and three walks while striking out nine batters.
At the plate, Colby Newman led the team in scoring, going 2-for-3 with a triple, three runs, one RBI, three stolen bases and a walk. Xavier Arias went 2-for-4 with a home run, a stolen base, two runs and two RBIs. Jason Yell added two more hits, going 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs, two runs and a stolen base. Sean Villanueva, Chris Brown and Jesse Riojas also had hits in the 10-run win.

The two wins propelled Nixon-Smiley to fourth place in District 27-3A, after Yoakum finished their season with wins over Luling and Stockdale and Luling finished their season with losses against Yoakum and Marion.
Nixon-Smiley is set to take on the champion of District 28-3A, the Tidehaven Tigers. Playoff dates have not been set as of press time.
