Mustangs fall to even record

NIXON — The Nixon-Smiley Mustangs fell to 2-2 overall as they lost to the San Antonio Cole Cougars 35-14. The Mustangs gave up 21 straight points before finally scoring in the third quarter, a nine-yard touchdown pass from Colby Newman to Devin Hester. The Cougars outscored the Mustangs in the fourth quarter 14-6, with Newman scoring on a 24-yard touchdown pass to Hester.

The Mustangs ran 46 times for 234 yards, but accumulated seven penalties for 60 yards. Newman led the way for 157 yards on 22 rushes. Jason Yell had 18 rushes for 56 yards. Newman throw 11 times, completing three catches for 37 yards and two scores. Hester caught all three receptions. He also rushed four times for 14 yards.

Defensively, Elix Carillo and Newman had one sack each. Efren Olalde had 1.5 sacks and Luiz Perez had 0.5 sacks. Santos Pompa forced a fumble while Xavier Mendiola recovered a fumble.

Nixon-Smiley travels to Falls City (2-2) this Friday, with kickoff set at 7:30 p.m.
