Multiple agencies assist in Nixon chase

GONZALES COUNTY — On July 6 at approximately 4 a.m., Joseph Jacques, 28, of Nixon, escaped from the custody of a Gonzales County Sheriff's Office deputy who had arrested him on an out-of-county warrant and failure to identify. The deputy had transported him to the Gonzales County Jail where he was preparing to begin intake procedures inside the gated sally port.

As Jacques was removed from the deputy’s patrol vehicle, he slipped one handcuff off and moved away from the deputy. When the deputy attempted to re-handcuff Jacques, he began to run, jumped onto the security fence, climbed around the razor-wire, and onto the roof of the sheriff’s office building.

Gonzales County Sheriff’s Office personnel, along with Gonzales Police Department officers, immediately began searching the area. It was discovered that Jacques had stolen a truck from an oilfield service yard approximately a half mile from the sheriff’s office. Vehicle information was passed on to surrounding law enforcement agencies and it was located a short time later by a Nixon Police Department officer in Nixon. The officer attempted to stop the vehicle, however, Jacques fled from the officer who then initiated a pursuit.

Gonzales County Sheriff’s Office deputies — along officers from multiple agencies — pursued Jacques through Gonzales, Wilson, and Guadalupe counties before he was forced to stop and taken into custody. During the pursuit, Jacques ran several civilian vehicles off the road and struck two law enforcement vehicles.

Jacques was transported to Gonzales Memorial Hospital where he was treated for minor lacerations sustained from the razor wire. He was later booked into the Gonzales County Jail on two charges of aggravated assault against a public servant, escape, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, and failure to identify. Jacques remains in custody on a total bond amount of $176,000 set by Pct. 1 Justice of the Peace Deidra Voigt.

Agencies assisting were the Gonzales Police Department, Nixon Police Department, Texas Highway Patrol and Air Unit, and the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office.
