Mayor, chamber director hopeful for economic recovery

Like other cities around the country, Gonzales was adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, having to endure the closure of businesses within the community.

With the recent reopening of local businesses, however, Chamber of Commerce Director Daisy Scheske-Freeman and Mayor Connie Kacir expressed hope and optimism that the city will continue to thrive the way it always has.

Regarding the chamber, Scheske-Freeman said the chamber’s lobby is closed, but that its social media, email, and phone are in full operation.

“We had switched our homepage on our website to show ‘Come and Support it,’ where members would give us weekly updates of their delivery of services,” she said.

When Gov. Greg Abbot authorized the gradual reopening of businesses, Scheske-Freeman said Gonzales chamber members who were affected by the closure were excited to open back up, but are also taking precautions to ensure the safety of staff and patrons. Her outlook on the future of local businesses remains optimistic.

“Gonzales businesses will adapt and succeed, just like they have in the past,” she said. “My observation since the opening of Phase Two is that the community is excited to be able to support local businesses to the best of their ability. As we continue to open Texas, please keep in mind that the risk of COVID-19 still remains. It is suggested that citizens continue to follow guidelines as recommended by healthcare professionals and elected officials.”

Mayor Kacir had some thoughts of her own regarding how the economy has suffered during this unprecedented time, saying that despite the setback, the city remains undeterred and focused on recovery. She noted that federal funds provided through the CARES Act and the local monies the Gonzales Economic Development Corporation provided to local businesses helped a lot. She added that, however, it could not cover the actual losses in business revenue.

Kacir said the city is scheduled to receive its April sales tax numbers on June 12, which will be an indicator of the loss of business revenues based upon lost tax revenues.

“I am excited to see the Gonzales economy reopen and I am very optimistic about our future and our recovery,” Kacir said. “The city council continues to work diligently to deliver incentives to our local businesses during this economic downturn. I am very confident Gonzales will exceed all expectations for returning to a prosperous future.”
