The Gonzales Main Street program announced at its meeting Thursday, May 2 it received national recognition and accreditation from Main Street America for the 19th consecutive year. The program received a 101.4 out of 107 on the 2019 Ten Criteria Annual Report of Progress, which spanned 10 sections judged from September 2017 to November 2018.

Main Street only missed points on the historic preservation and reporting criteria. Every other section received perfect marks.

“It happened because of the board, it happened because of y’all,” said Main Street Administrator Barbara Friedrich, addressing the Main Street advisory board. “It happened because of all the hard work that y’all put in.”

Other news from the meeting:

  • The advisory board approved waiving Summer Concert Series booth fees for the Gonzales Youth Center in exchange for the GYC’s help in cleaning up the concert grounds. The GYC will also be selling ice cream and popsicles during the concert.
  • Main Street is looking into bringing in a Renaissance Fair to Gonzales. As of now, no timeframe has been set for the potential event.
  • No immediate action was taken regarding the Christmas/downtown decorations. The board would like to have the decorations taken down after the Concert Series ends in July but before Come and Take It Fest in October.
  • Board member Shelli Van Kirk reported that the City-Wide Yard Sale was smaller than last year and featured 25-35 local yard sales.
  • Board member Karen Jacobs said the sponsorship packet is still being worked on. The board is considering giving stickers to Main Street sponsors.
