Local school districts in Gonzales County have been finding ways to continue to connect to their communities, whether it’s through a curbside meal service or distance learning, during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gonzales ISD begins curbside meal service

Gonzales ISD began their curbside meal service on March 23 and is expected to have meals available for the next few weeks. Located at Gonzales Elementary, GISD Food Service have provided free breakfast and lunch meals for children (18 years old and younger). One breakfast and one lunch will be given to each child present in the vehicle at the time of pickup. Both breakfast and lunches will be given at pickup, to eliminate parents having to return.

Younger children who are not enrolled in school at this moment are allowed to receive meals as well.

Pickup time is Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. noon. Meals will include cold and non-temperature items.

As of press time, Gonzales ISD’s school closure has been extended to April 9, in alignment with the City of Gonzales’ recommendations. School is set to resume on Monday, April 13.

Nixon-Smiley CISD connects with students online

With Nixon-Smiley CISD closed until at least April 7, the school district has been sharing information with the community with updates every day on their Facebook page.

District officials unveiled a map where the school will distribute bundled breakfast and lunch to all students in the area. NSCISD has also shared resources, such as work packets and resources on how to deal with the uncertainty and anxiety of the current pandemic.

This week, NSCISD unveiled a “Virtual Spirit Week” for students and parents to take a part of. Pictures are being shared on social media with the hashtag #NSMustangStrong and #NSremotelearning. Thursday is “Super Hero Day,” where participants are asked to wear their favorite super hero shirt or costume while completing their remote learning. Friday is “Talent Day,” where kids are asked to share a video or a picture of a hidden talent they may have.

Waelder ISD closed until at least April 7

Waelder ISD has also used their website and Facebook pages to share information to their community.

The school district’s current plan is for staff to return to Waelder on Monday, April 6, with the school opening its doors to students on April 7.

District officials have shared various resources including “Cool Math,” virtual field trips and free educational websites for kids.

All children under the age of 18 are also provided with breakfast and lunch. Waelder ISD will be serving breakfast from 8-9 a.m. and lunch from 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. throughout the school closure. Drive-up and walk-up service will be provided at the back entrance of the cafeteria on North Ave C.
