Little League BBQ must go on

GONZALES — Saturday’s cold weather and overnight rain forced postponement of the opening ceremonies and games for the Gonzales Little League. Flooded fields, mist and 45 degree temperatures caused league officials to cancel the games, but not the huge fundraising barbecue of pork steak, giblet rice and green beans.

According to Gilbert Camarillo, the smoking crew arrived around 4 to 4:30 a.m. on Saturday and had 10 pits cooking. Between the brick pits and smokers, over 2,000 pork steaks were cooked and prepared for the large throng of vehicles who came by to support the Little League. The long line of cars was almost backed up to 183, but the hardy crew of volunteers kept the line moving and had a fast assembly of food packed and ready to go for hungry.

According to organizers, they expected to serve over 2,000 dinners on Saturday.
