Leon August Netardus

Leon August Netardus, 90, of Gonzales, passed away Friday, October 4, 2019. He was born April 12, 1929 in Weid, Texas the son of August and Lydia Skrehot Netardus. He graduated from Gonzales High School in 1946. After graduation he joined the U.S. Army and served in Japan. He attended St. Mary’s University in San Antonio and received his BBA in 1950. He married Rosemary Wroblesky on July 2, 1955 in Gonzales.

He began his long career with GVEC and retired as the business manager. He was awarded the Monroe Schauer Award for 38 years of dedicated service. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council 5090, Gonzales Lion’s Club, Gonzales Chamber of Commerce and the Quarterback Club (Apache Booster’s Club). He won the David B. Walshak award in 2000 and was a past chairman of Come and Take It.

Leon was a longtime tennis player, enjoyed fishing and dove hunting. He was an avid Gonzales Apache fan and announced many games in years past. He was quite the actor being in many productions with the Crystal Theatre and he portrayed Green DeWitt with the “Gonzales the Beginning” reenactment group. He was an expert storyteller, he led tours of Gonzales throughout the years and wrote “Ghosts of Gonzales” along with other articles about Gonzales history. On his 90th birthday he was honored by the Gonzales Public Library by their naming of “The Leon Netardus Reading Room.”

Most of all his greatest joy was his loving family, He was known as “Papa Leon” to his grandchildren and taught them tennis, how to drive and play poker. He is survived by his wife of 64 years Rosemary Netardus of Gonzales; daughters Priscilla Finch of Gonzales, Janet Flynt and husband Allen of League City; grandchildren: Kathryn Sedlar and husband Danny of Flatonia, Sarah Kidwell and husband Shawn of Friendswood, John Finch and wife Jen of Bastrop, Emily Flynt of College Station and Jacob Flynt of College Station; also surviving are 5 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Joseph Netardus and son in law Larry Finch.

Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Monday, October 7 at Seydler-Hill Funeral Home. A prayer vigil and Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Tuesday, October 8, 2019 at St. James Catholic Church with Reverend Paul Raaz officiating. Interment will follow at the St. James Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers include John David Boothe, Danny Sedlar, Shawn Kidwell, John Finch, Jacob Flynt and Barry Boothe.
