Late score drops Nixon-Smiley to 0-2

NATALIA — Nixon-Smiley (2-5, 0-2) are still in search of their first district win after giving up a touchdown midway through the fourth to lose 28-20 to Natalia (6-1, 1-1).
Natalia opened their scoring with a 70-yard touchdown pass, going up 7-0. Nixon-Smiley responded with a 25-yard touchdown pass from Colby Newman to Daniel Rodriguez. In the second quarter, Natalia scored on an 11-yard touchdown run, but Rodriguez responded with an 80-yard touchdown run of his own, to tie the game 14-14. In the fourth quarter, Natalia scored with 11:56 left in the game to go up 21-14, then Devin Hester busted out a 72-yard touchdown run to bring the Mustangs within one after the two-point conversion failed. At 8:50 remaining, Natalia connected on a 52-yard touchdown pass, the final score of the game, with Natalia winning 28-20.
Newman led the team in rushing with 23 attempts for 99 yards. Hester had five attempts for 74 yards and a touchdown. Rodriguez had six attempts for 84 yards and a score. Newman also threw 7-of-15 for 85 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Hester caught four balls for 47 yards while Rodriguez caught three balls for 38 yards and a score. Hester also snagged an interception while Newman and Efren Olalde each had a combined sack.
The Mustangs host Dilley (3-4, 1-1) this Friday with kickoff scheduled at 7:30 p.m.
