Lady Cats blow lead, lose 45-32 to Cubettes

WAELDER — The Waelder Lady Cats had a formula in getting a lead against Round Top-Carmine. Feed their posts down low and take advantage of their height against the Cubettes. Unfortunately, turnovers became a problem for the home squad in the second half as Waelder gave too many easy baskets, losing their game 45-32.

After starting the game down 2-0, the Lady Wildcats went on a 9-2 run, getting a pair of baskets from Honesty Fields and Yasmin Porter down low with guard Malorie Puente adding five points, including a three pointer. The Cubettes scored four straight before Fields rebounded and scored on a put back to give Waelder the 11-6 lead.

In the second, Puente started the quarter on an easy layup on a fast break to go up 13-6. Later she added another score while Fields got another bucket in the paint to give Waelder a 17-8 lead late in the half. Round Top-Carmine counter with a 6-0 run in the final minute of the half, scoring two from the free-throw line to cut the lead to 17-14.

Their run continued at the start of the third as the Cubettes went on a 8-2 run to take the 22-19 lead over the Lady Cats. Fields and Puente help retake the lead as they went on a 6-0 run before the Cubettes again finished the quarter with the final four points, taking a 26-25 lead.

Waelder’s final lead came early in the fourth with a basket by Daniela Nino. The whistles began to blow in the final quarter of play as the Cubettes shot out to 15-3 run, scoring six of their points from the free-throw line.

Porter scored Waelder’s final point, cutting the lead to 43-32 before Round Top-Carmine added two more from the free-throw line to end the game.

Puente finished the game with 18 points while Fields had eight. Porter added four and Nino had two.

Waelder drops to 1-7 in district while Round Top-Carmine climbed to 3-5. The Lady Cats take on undefeated Moulton tonight with tipoff scheduled at 6 p.m.
