Lady Apaches trounce Smithville at home

GONZALES — The Gonzales Lady Apaches took care of business Friday night, taking down the Smithville Lady Tigers at home 5-0 in District 28-4A play. The team pressured Smithville all game long, scoring quickly in the 9th, 11th and 12th minute to go up 3-0.

With 31:23 left in the first half, Briana Gomez scored on a chip from 30 yards out, kicking it right over the head of Smithville’s goal keeper to give the Lady Apaches the early 1-0 lead. Forward Alaisa Chavez added to the lead with a shot inside the box, giving Gonzales a 2-0 advantage with 29:23 left in the half. At the edge of the box, Ashlynn Tastch shot the ball and found the net, pushing the lead to 3-0.

The Lady Apaches had many chances in that half as Smithville conceded six corners. The team earned a penalty kick in the 29th minute, but Yaqueline Vazquez’s kick was too high.

Their next goal came in the second half, with 18:41 left in the game. Samantha Gallegos found her way inside the box and shot the ball to the left of the keeper to give Gonzales the 4-0 lead. Three minutes later, Seidy Villegas chipped it over the goalie to give Gonzales what would be the final score of 5-0, pushing the team’s district record to 2-2-0.

The Lady Apaches then torched Caldwell on Feb. 13 13-2, to move up to third in the district with a 3-2-0 record.

The Lady Apaches host Austin Eastside Memorial on Friday, with the game scheduled to start at 5:15 p.m. Gonzales then hosts La Grange on Tuesday, with a scheduled start of 7:15 p.m.
