Lady Apaches split games in three-team turmoil

The Gonzales Lady Apaches swept Tidehaven (25-15, 25-21, 25-18), then lost in a tight contest against Yoakum (25-17, 27-19, 25-20) in their two games Tuesday night.

“The girls played well,” Gonzales Head Coach Bernice Voigt said of the game against Tidehaven.

Leading away in kills were Rachel Staggs and Chelsie Hastings with five each. Assists leader was Kiley Allen with eight. Maura Garcia led the team with four aces, while Kiley Allen and Sam Barnick had three each. Barnick also led in digs with 17. Both Hayley Sample and Hailey Rios each had one block.

The Lady Apaches then lost in three sets to Yoakum, playing in “a strong match to a very tall Yoakum team,” Voigt noted.

Staggs led in kills with eight, followed by Sample with five. Allen came away with 14 assists. Sample had four aces while Hastings and Allen had three aces each. Hastings and Rios each had one block while Barnick led with 10 digs.

Gonzales is currently in a three-day tournament in Schulenburg though results to Thursday’s games were unavailable before press time.
