Lady Apaches named to all-district team

GONZALES — The young Gonzales Lady Apaches softball team ended their season in the bi-district round, losing to Fredericksburg 10-0 and 12-0 in the two-game series.

With all District 27-4A teams eliminated from postseason team, the district recently released their all-district team with multiple Lady Apaches making the list.

Starting pitcher Shelby Davis was named the newcomer of the year in the district.

“Shelby had a tremendous year as a freshman,” Gonzales Head Coach Sam White said. “She batted in the first position all year and was the only slapper we had. She filled a huge role in our pitching staff late in the season in district when we suffered an injury to [Ashleigh] Luensmann.”

White continued to explain Davis’ role with the team, noting her .985 fielding percentage on the mound and at second base.

“She only had one error,” White noted. “She made some huge plays in the infield. She batted .278, five hits, three RBIs, three walks, .381 On Base %. in a very tough district, where hitting was tough for us. It was truly amazing when her name was announced to receive this award. She had some huge competition with freshmen from Wimberley and La Vernia. However, her ability to be versatile made her stand out to the coaches within the district. Coaches recognize those players who have to step up and make contributions in all areas of the game, especially late in the year. I am so proud of her and how hard she worked this year.”

Named to the second team was junior pitcher Alexis Martinez, sophomore infielder Ali Rocha and senior outfielder Haley Garza.

“Ali Rocha had a great year too at first base,” White said. “She made the change from third to first because Trinity Aguero was playing well at third.”

Martinez’s two wins in district against Austin Eastside help propel her to second-team honors. Meanwhile, Garza was touted for being a dual-sport athlete who led the team in batting average.

Jiseala “Chella” Longoria, Bailey Bennett, Trinity Aguero and Alyssa DeLuna were all honorably mentioned.

Named to the all-district academic team were Haley Garza, Desaray Rodriguez, Kayley Martinez, Bailey Bennett, Sydney Clack, Jiseala “Chella” Longoria, Shelby Davis and Ashleigh Luensmann.
