Kathryn Rozella “Katy” Short, 78, of Gonzales, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2018. Kathryn was born at home in Jackson County to Joseph Lauris Rusling and Ruby Mae Brister Rusling. At the age of 16 she married James Clay Short on Jan. 1, 1956 in Lockhart. She was a member of Memorial Heights Baptist Church.

In the early years of Kathryn and James marriage, Kathryn found herself living in a boxcar with all the furniture nailed to the floor, including the baby’s crib. James worked for the railroad and for two years his family traveled the rail line with him as he performed his job.

The doors to Katy and James’ home were always open for friends and friends of her children. Katy and James had dedicated their lives to caring for their daughters. She was a wonderful loving mother and grandmother. Katy supported her daughters through girl’s auxiliary, Brownies, Girl Scouts, PTA and most importantly leading them to Jesus Christ through her faith. Katy had taught Sunday school for 15 years and supported the vacation bible school for years. She lived her life for Christ and as an example for her children and others to follow.

Katy was a very good cook and loved to make cakes shaped and decorated appropriately to celebrate whatever the occasion might be. Cupcakes where always plentiful and many made their way to school and various other functions. She loved trying out new recipes she cut out of a newspaper or magazine. As her family grew with the addition of grandchildren, the door to her house were now a revolving door. She was an extremely family oriented woman and always looked forward to babysitting her grandchildren who lovingly called her Gigi.

Katy loved to laugh, and her family brought her much joy. She reveled in moments when they could all be together. Katy was very close and dearly loved her sister and brothers. Katy enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and voraciously reading mystery novels. She enjoyed traveling when the opportunity was presented and truly enjoyed her trip to England with her daughter. Katy was many things to many people; most fulfilling was being a mother and grandmother and most rewarding was being a child of God.
