Joel Leonard “Whit” Whittington II passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday Sept. 19, 2018 in Tyler. He was born Aug. 8, 1976 in Jackson, Miss., the son of Joel L. and Cheryl Keifer Whittington. He was a resident of Diboll. He was educated in Gonzales. Following graduation, he attended Victoria College and obtained his law enforcement degree. Eager to learn, he then attended Angelina College and obtained certification as a diesel mechanic. He also held a CDL license which he earned while studying in Dallas.

Whit, Joel’s nickname, loved people and animals. He often stopped to talk to the greeters at Walmart and helped people carry their shopping bags if they needed help. No job was too small or too big, he tried to help where help was needed. He never met a stranger.

He studied history with great interest, he was particularly interested in World War II. He was an avid collector of German medals and had an extensive collection. Whit was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Lufkin. He will be greatly missed by his parents Joel and Cheryl Whittington of Gonzales and by his many friends, which were considered as Joel and Cheryl’s children also.  Graveside services will be held 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30 at the Belmont Cemetery. A memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Presbyterian Church in Gonzales.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Seydler-Hill Funeral Home. Friends may sign the guestbook at seydlerhillfuneralhome.com.
