Jim Price cleanup at Apache field canceled amid COVID-19

The annual Jim Price cleanup project scheduled for August 1 has been canceled due to safety concerns involving the spread of coronavirus, according to City Manager Tim Patek.

“This is to inform our residents and community that the Jim Price Clean-Up scheduled for August 1, at Apache Field has been cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions,” Patek wrote in an email. “We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. The next Jim Price Clean-Up will be scheduled in the spring of next year. For more information, please call City Hall at 830-672-2815.”

In the past, residents of Gonzales have met at Apache Field for this event to safely throw away batteries, scrap metal, electronics and appliances as well as large disposables like mattresses.

For those who have items they’d intended to dispose of at the Jim Price cleanup, these either can be held onto for the event’s rescheduling in the spring of 2021 or events by district, or taken to appropriate waste facilities instead. For items such as mattresses and large appliances, the City of Gonzales offers a free yearly “Bulky Pickup” through Frontier Waste Solutions.

“When the resident has extra bulk waste, even something larger like a kitchen appliance or mattress, that they need to get rid of they call City of Gonzales at 1-830-672-2815,” according to the city’s website. “They will let the customer know the day of pickup, usually within the customer's next two normally scheduled trash pick up days. Then the customer can put up to 5 cubic yards of trash on their curb.”

Other items, such as batteries, scrap metal and electronics, can be taken to A&S Recycling.

An update from the City of Gonzales Facebook page indicates that cleanup events will be held in each district by notification only.
