James Posey Alford, 97, of Gonzales, passed away Friday, Dec. 14. Posey was born Feb. 22, 1921 in Houston to James Isaac Alford and Mary Ellen Gilmore Alford. Posey married Mary Elliot Henderson on July 18, 1953 at the First Baptist Church in Waelder. Posey was a member of the Gonzales First Baptist Church.

Posey graduated from Texas A&M University with the Class of 1943 with a bachelor of science in agronomy. He was a licensed school counselor and taught agriculture at the Waelder High School for 17 years. Posey continued his studies at Texas A&M where he received a master’s degree in education and he received a School Counseling Certification from Southwest Texas State University. Posey worked for GISD as the middle school counselor where he remained until he retired.

James Posey Alford is survived by his loving family, daughters and sons-in-law, Amanda and Robert Urban of Corpus Christi, Mary Chella and Marquis Gordon of Caldwell, son and daughter-in-law, James Henderson Alford and Giuseppina of Gonzales and 15 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Elliott Henderson Alford, parents, and a brother, Delmar Ray Alford.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 20 in the Gonzales First Baptist Church with Rev. Anthony DuBose and Rev. Richard Cobbler officiating. Interment will follow in the Gonzales Masonic Cemetery with the Masonic burial rite and Military Honors. Pallbearers include: Jim Alford, Mark Harrison, Keith Harrison, Shawn Harrison, Danny Janecka, Ross Urban, Jack Burney, and Kyle Crozier. Honorary pallbearer: John Posey Alford and Travis Gordon.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday evening in Seydler-Hill Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Gonzales Public Library, the Hopkinsville Masonic Lodge and the Gonzales Masonic Lodge.
