Hernandez becomes first-ever Lady Apache powerlifting state champ

CORPUS CHRISTI — After becoming the second ever Lady Apache to attend the state powerlifting meet her freshman year, senior lifter Ericka Hernandez finally reached yet another milestone.

State champion.

The duo of Hernandez and Khelsea Cray were Gonzales’ lone athletes at the state meet, with Hernandez competing in the 220-plus weight class and Cray in the 132-pound weight class.

Hernandez had a squat of 450 pounds, bench press of 195 pounds and dead lift of 420 pounds to total out to 1065 pounds. The total was an improvement of 40 pounds versus her regional lifts where she had splits of 430-180-415.

Hernandez beat out Rio Hondo’s Monica Gallegos by five pounds, who had splits of 405-270-385 to get to 1060 pounds. 

Hernandez now becomes the first ever Lady Apache to become a state champion in powerlifting.

Meanwhile, Cray took 10th with her splits of 300-130-325 to total to 755. She improved on her regional lifts by a total of 20 pounds. Salado’s Maddie Graham placed first with her total at 940 pounds.
