Hazel Ruth Blundell Bean

Hazel Ruth Blundell Bean left this earthly world to travel on her next journey on Monday, Nov. 26, 2018.  How wonderful it will be!  Hazel always said she had rarely traveled outside Gonzales County; now the adventure begins.  Hazel was born May 22, 1928 to Leslie Irvin Blundell and Florinda Bishop Blundell. She was the only daughter and enjoyed growing up with her three brothers, Nolan, Nile and Bill. She was a member of the Harwood Baptist Church.

Hazel lived her entire life in the Thompsonville community, except for a short period of higher education spent in San Antonio where she studied and graduated from Durham’s School of Business. While there she resided with the Conrad family where she served as Nanny to their two children. Without  ever knowing this, her only granddaughter dubbed her “Nanny” and so she continued to love and care for all.

Hazel married Hollis Bean on Dec. 20, 1951 in Seguin when they decided to elope. These two spent nearly 67 years together sharing work, family duties and all the memories that come with such a long relationship.

Hazel and her brothers were children of the Great Depression. They learned early in life the necessity of hard work and thriftiness.  Hazel had the amazing ability to “do much with very little.” Her philosophy of life closely mirrored that of her husband, “use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without.” For many years she lovingly made every garment her daughter wore. At the time, these may have been considered “homemade” but indeed were truly couture.

Vegetables, fruit and flowers from her garden were always shared with friends and neighbors. She was an excellent cook and baker. She found time to serve on the Thompsonville Cemetery Association, Ladies Club, as room mother, 4-H club and care for her parents and elderly neighbors.

She is preceded in death by her parents, son Hollis Ray Bean, and brothers Nolan and Nile Blundell.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Hollis Bean; daughter Bonnie Hyman, (Bill); granddaughter Erin Elizabeth Marshall (Thomas); great granddaughters, Emma Elizabeth and Autney Rose Marshall; and brother, Bill Blundell (Juanita).  She also survived by a host of dearly loved nieces and nephews.

Graveside services to celebrate her life will be held at Thompsonville Cemetery at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28 with grandson Thomas Marshall officiating. Sharing memories and visitation will be held immediately following at the Thompsonville Community Center.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Seydler Hill. Memorial gifts may be made to the Thompsonville Cemetery Association; American Cancer Society; or the donor’s choice.  Friends may leave their condolences by visiting www.seydlerhillfuneralhome.com.  Services are under the care and direction of Seydler-Hill Funeral Home.
