Posted

Gussie Rozelle Walker was born to Oscar Lewis Sr. and Lillie Mae Johnson on Oct. 14, 1926, in Gonzales, Texas. Gussie was embraced by the arms of God and taken home to be with him on June 7, 2020.

Gussie grew up in Gonzales around many relatives and friends. Gussie was reared in a home of love with parents who loved God and served him all their lives. She was baptized and became a member of Providence Baptist Church at an early age. Her employment included working in the home of the Kennard family, which is now a historical building in the city. On Dec. 10, 1955, Gussie united in marriage to Wiley Walker Sr. and three precious sons, Wiley Jr., Larry, and Ralph were born to this union. Barbara T. Lewis became a cherished addition to the family unit.

Everyone who knew Gussie knew she was a “busy bee.” She was a wife, mother, daughter, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, niece, cousin, and friend to all who were in her life. One could always find “Ms. Gussie” in her car headed to her parent’s home to check on them; taking family members and friends to the Walmart; selling dinners at the church; or attending a Progressive Club, Missions or Edward Alumni meeting of some kind. No one could do a “cake walk” like Gussie Rozelle! She loved the outdoors, people and laughter. In her later years, she could be seen walking along Hwy. 183 and Hwy. 90 as her morning past-time.

Gussie is preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Lillie Mae Lewis; brothers Oscar Lewis Jr., Roy Lewis, and Hulon Lewis; sister Eva Mae William; one sister and one brother passed away in infancy. Gussie is survived by three sisters Marie Bullock, Gladys Lewis, and Helen Ross. The four surviving children of Wiley and Gussie have been blessed by the love and care of their father and mother. Gussie leaves to live out her legacy two granddaughters, Tamala Tatum and Halle Walker; grandsons Narada Walker and Ralph Walker II, along with a host of great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews, and great-nieces, great-nephews and a host of family and friends.
