Gonzales council to hear from public tonight

Posted

The second of two scheduled public hearings is slated for tonight (Thursday) at city hall for citizens to give input on the city's proposed tax rate.

The Gonzales city council has approved a preliminary tax rate of .30510, which exceeds the lower of the effective or rollback tax rate. If adopted by council members, it would increase tax revenues from tax roll properties by 10.47 percent over last year's rates.

The new fiscal year begins Oct. 1 and the city's budget and tax rate must be adopted prior that date. The proposed budget will raise more total property taxes than last year's budget by $121,303.03.

After the hearing concludes, a workshop will be held regarding the proposed budget. The meeting begins at 6 p.m.
