GISD trustees file for re-election

GONZALES — The Gonzales Independent School District is still accepting applications for those interested in running for the two spots available this year on the board of trustees. As of Wednesday, the only two people offering up to be on the ballot are the incumbents.

In GISD District 1, Gloria Torres has filed her paperwork to run for re-election. She has held a spot on the school board for the past 36 years. In District 2, Justin Schwaush has made his decision to run again. He is currently serving out his ninth year as a trustee.

The other trustees on the board — those not up for election on May 4 — have 55 years worth of collective representation as trustees. Board President Glenn Menking has served the past 17 years, Josie Smith-Wright 16 years, and both Ross Hendershot III and Sue Gottwald have served the past 11 years as trustees. The freshman of the bunch is Sandra Gorden, who is just completing her first year. That's a whopping 101 years of combined service for the board of directors, almost as long as GISD has been playing football.

For anyone who wishes to challenge any of the incumbents and to set their own agenda for the school district, there's still time to file. Applications will be accepted until Friday, Feb. 15 at the GISD administration offices at 1711 N. Sarah DeWitt Dr. Administration officials can be reached at 830-672-9551.
