Gillespie County Fair hits 130 this weekend

It might be a bit of a drive, but anything billed as the oldest continuous county fair in Texas surely deserves your attention for a day trip.

The Gillespie County Fair in Fredericksburg is celebrating 130 years in operation Aug. 23-26 with a plethora of activities for adults and children. You'll have a midway, mutton busting, agriculture exhibits, domino and washer tournaments, sausage-on-a-stick, pie and quilt contests, tractor show, and live music for dancing. They even throw in some pari-mutuel horse racing.

On the musical side, Thursday features a free lineup with The Peterson Brothers performing at 7:30 p.m. and Dale Watson at 9:30 p.m.. Friday features Jake Hooker and the Outsiders at 8 p.m. Admission is $8 until 6 p.m. and $15 after. Saturday has Steve Wariner at 9 p.m. and Cory Morrow at 10:30 p.m. Tickets are $8 until 6 p.m. and $20 after.

Carnival wristbands are $25 for Thursday and Friday and $30 for Saturday. The big parade rolls through town on Friday morning at 10:30 a.m.
