G-Town Striders qualify for regional meet

Many local athletes on the AAU track and field team G-Town Striders competed in the district qualifier last week for their chance to compete in the regional meet this week.

On the girls side, Avionna Houston will compete in the 800-meter run, the 1500-meter run and the turbo javelin for the eight-and-under age group. Haley Garza qualified in the 800-meter and 1500-meter run for the 17-18 age group. Jaliyah Jackson is in the eight-and-under for turbo javelin and shot put. Kea’Anna White is in the nine-year age group for turbo javelin and shot put. Le’Anndrea McCarty will be in the 17-18 age group in the 800-meter and 1500-meter run.

In the 12-year-old age group will be in Nika James for turbo javelin. Makayla Smith will compete in the turbo-javelin event for the 10-year-old age group. Tianna Smith is in the 12-year-old age group for the 800-meter and 1500-meter. High school athlete Veronica Moreno qualified for the 1500-meter and 3000-meter run in the 15-16 age group.

On the boys side, Briceson Moore is in the eight-and-under for turbo javelin. Damion Hunt will be busy, competing in the 200-meter, 400-meter and 800-meter in the 10-year-old age group. Jermane Upshaw also has three events to compete in as he’ll be in the 11-year-old age group for discus throw, turbo javelin and shot put. Justin Kloesel will compete in the nine-year-old age group for tubo javelin and shot put. Kamren Cavit is in the 800-meter, 1500-meter and the javelin throw for the 14-year-old group. Keath White Jr. will be competing in the turbo javelin for nine-year-old group. Scotty Upshaw, another multi-event athlete, is in the 14-year-old age group for discus throw, shot put and pole vault. Tyvione Roaches is in the 17-18 group for discus throw and shot put.

The 2018 AAU Track & Field Region 19 qualifier began Wednesday and runs through Saturday in Converse, though results were unavailable before press time.
