Free lunch!

Each Gonzales school may qualify for free lunch program

When school resumes this fall nearly every student in the Gonzales Independent School District will qualify for the free meal program.

At the GISD Board of Trustees meeting June 8, Edward Wayner, director of food service, informed the board that he is awaiting word from the Region 13 Child Nutrition Program to review numbers for Gonzales High School to see if it qualifies for the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) Child Nutrition Program. If it does, it will join the other five schools in the district for the CEP.

“They are actually working today on certifying our numbers,” Wayner said after the meeting. “They have to certify a percentage of the names submitted off the State Identified List for GISD.”

Through the program, if a certain number of students at a school qualify for free and reduced lunches, the whole school qualifies.

“If the high school does not go CEP (lunches) will remain at $2.40,” he explained. “Breakfast has been free for all students for several years.”

The board authorized a price increase for meals for anyone who does not meet the free lunch program qualifications.

“Adult breakfast will be $2.20 and adult lunch will be $3.95,” Wayner said. “Price increases are required per USDA pricing model requirements to stay at or above the free reimbursement rate and commodity rate which currently is $3.84 and we anticipate it will be $3.95 for ’20-21.”

In other action, the board:

• Approved several COVID-19 waivers, including the instructional materials inventory, missed school days, and required early notice of students at risk of failure.

• Authorized the senior class to disburse their activity account funds to private individuals.

• Approved a fuel, lubricant, and oil contract with Schmidt and Sons.
