Frank Mathew Patterson Jr., 76, of Gonzales, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 6. He was born in Newgulf, Texas on Dec. 7, 1940, the eldest son of Frank Mathew Patterson Sr., and Dessie Finch Patterson. Frank grew up in Houston, Texas and graduated from San Jacinto High School as a member of the Class of 1958. He attended the University of Houston before marrying high school classmate, Rose Anna Hernandez, in December of 1960.

Frank began his career working in the equipment rental business at Abbey Party Rentals in Houston, Texas. In 1968, he founded Aladdin Rents, in San Antonio, Texas, with his wife and parents, where for nearly a decade he provided employment for many members of his family. In 1977, he launched Patterson Insurance Agency as an agent for Farmers Insurance before leaving to broker land leases in the oil industry for his sister, the late Myrna McLeroy, at McLeroy Land Group in Gonzales, Texas. In the 1990s, Frank joined his brother, James Patterson, in the securities brokerage business, and was licensed at several Texas-based firms, including Westcap Securities and Shearson Lehman. He remained in the financial services business for the rest of his career, providing investment guidance for high-net-worth individuals.

Frank loved music, playing the piano and singing live and recorded music almost all of his life. In the 1950s and early 60s, he joined several rock and pop groups, performing at times with Kenny Rogers, BJ Thomas and the late Mickey Newbury. In the 1970s, he formed the Cibolo Six, a group of journeymen musicians from Boerne, Texas, who annually performed at the Kendall County Fair and other civic events. In 1983, after hearing President Reagan describe a young Marine’s survival of the barracks bombing in Lebanon, Frank wrote and recorded “The Ballad of Semper Fi,” and performed it live at the 1984 Second Marine Division Reunion in New York.

In Boerne, Frank will be remembered for establishing the Boerne Junior Football League (BJFL), the city’s first youth football club. Beginning in 1972, with just four teams for 5th and 6th graders, Frank led the growth of the BJFL to include teams and programs for every grade in primary school, creating a feeder program for Boerne’s middle and high school football programs. In 1978, the inaugural graduates of the BJFL were members of the Boerne High School football team to earn the first of many winning seasons in nearly ten years.

Frank spoke often of his love for family and was especially proud of his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his sister Rebecca Ann Pacheco and husband Jesse Pacheco, his brother, James Wayne Patterson, his son, Frank Mathew Patterson III and wife Leslie France Patterson, his daughter Amber Lea Janak and husband Michael Dean Janak, grandchildren, Ashlea Eryn Patterson, Kelsea Dean Janak, Haden Mathew Janak, Oscar France Patterson, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Myrna Sue McLeroy, and his sister-in-law, Vickie Lynn Willard Patterson.

Visitation will begin at 9 a.m., with a service at 10 a.m., Friday, Dec. 22, at Memorial Heights Baptist Church, with Pastor Clint Lowery officiating.
