Mustangs fighting for playoff spot

Nixon-Smiley blew out Skidmore-Tynan last Friday in a 40-12 victory. The Mustangs (3-5, 1-2) ran for 402 total rushing yards. Jesse Riojas led the way, rushing 16 times for 158 yards and three touchdowns. Quarterback Xavier Arias ran nine times for 91 yards and one touchdown, Dario Jantes ran eight times for 88 yards and one touchdown and Mario Ponce ran eight times for 68 yards and one touchdown.

Defensively, Bradyn Martinez came up with an interception which he returned 50 yards. Arias had two sacks and a team-leading nine solo tackles. Zac Perez also came away with two sacks while Mateo Abrego and Jeremy Van Gundy each had one sack.

Nixon-Smiley has a tough task, taking on the Natalia Mustangs (6-2, 2-1) on the road Friday. Natalia’s two losses are against district-opponent Poth (7-1, 3-0) and non-district opponent Jourdanton (7-1, 3-1 in District 15-3AI).

Kickoff for this Friday is set for 7:30 p.m.

Rivalry game

Shiner St. Paul (5-3, 1-0) and Hallettsville Sacred Heart (3-4, 1-0), who both are coming off a bye week, face off in a battle for first place in district. The Cardinals lost the last district game against Sacred Heart last season, but came away with the last laugh, knocking off their rivals on their way to a state championship.

Kickoff at Hallettsville is set for 7:30 p.m.

Final home game before renovations

The Luling Eagles (0-8, 0-3) have their final home game before renovations to their field. They host the struggling Yoakum Bulldogs (2-6, 0-3). Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
