Flora Staton

Posted

On March 16, 2019, Flora Staton was called home to be with her lord and savior.  Flora, daughter of Martin and Theodora (Liguez) Cantu, was born on Nov. 22, 1938 in Gonzales.

Flora was a lifelong resident of Gonzales where she loved singing in the church choir, attending Sunday school and church, and being a member of the Women’s Missionary Union.

In 1957 she married Doug Staton, also of Gonzales.  They had been married for over 53 years before his death in 2010.  Flora yearned for a child for many years and was filled with joy when she was blessed with her son, Doug Staton Jr., in 1967.  More than any other accomplishment, Flora was most fulfilled by her role as a mother to Dougie.

At age 14, Flora started working at Cal-Maine (Dubose) and was later employed by J&B Sausage Company.

Flora loved family and friends and enjoyed hosting gatherings at her home.  On holidays, you could always expect a kitchen filled to the brim with food, an overly loaded dessert table (because she loved sweets), and lots of laughter billowing from the dinner table.  She loved extending invitations to gatherings at her home, and you never knew who may drop by for a bite to eat and some fun and fellowship.

Flora is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Doug, and her beloved son, Dougie; brothers, Martin Jr., Adam, Salvador, and Pete; sisters, Dora Rodriguez, Euelia Ramos, Rosa Longoria, Minnie Casarez, Mary Ann Perez, and Gloria Leal.

She is survived by her friend and companion, Filemon Soto, whom she married in 2012; step-children, Elvira, Adan, Martin, Felimon Jr., Aleida, Ana, Yany, Noel, and Olegario; brothers, Raul and Alvin; sister-in-law Billie Howell, and many nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.

Come celebrate her life with us. Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. on Monday, March 18 at Seydler Hill Funeral Home in Gonzales.  Services are on Tuesday, March 19 at 10 a.m. in the Seydler-Hill Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Clint Lowery officiating.  Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.  Pallbearers are Grover Howell, Dave Radoe, Shane Howell, Jason Howell, Bobby Howell, and Michael Pergrem.  Memorials may be made to the Leukemia Research Foundation, 191 Waukegan Rd., Ste 105, Northfield, IL 60093.  Friends may leave their condolences by visiting www.seydlerhillfuneralhome.com.  Services are under the care and direction of Seydler-Hill Funeral Home.
