Fernando B. “Fred” Soto

Fernando B. “Fred” Soto, 60, of Austin, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 20. He was born Nov. 12, 1957 in Gonzales the son of Julio M. and Julia Bustamante Soto.

He graduated from Gonzales High School, attended Texas Lutheran University and The Berkley College of Music in Boston, MA. Fred was an accomplished, award winning musician. He was a three-time Grammy nominee. He played with the “Latin Breed” and also with “The Tortilla Factory”. He was a well-known saxophonist and was inducted into the Tejano Music Hall of Fame in January of 2015. He was a man of many talents, along with his musical career; he was an artist, creative writer and was known as an excellent chef.

He is survived by his companion Brenda Tijerina of Austin; sons Jonathan David Soto, Christopher Albert Soto both of Austin and Jaylen Daniel Soto of Pleasanton; daughter Lladira Cristina Ramos of Pleasanton; sisters Rosie Ann Flores and husband George of Gonzales and Leticia Anna Reyna and husband John of Boise, Idaho; brother Hector Luis Soto and companion Rosie Ross of Gonzales.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be Saturday, Dec. 23, from 12 noon until 2 p.m. at St. James Catholic Church. The rosary will follow at 2 p.m. The funeral mass will be celebrated at 2:30 p.m. with Reverend Paul Raaz officiating. Interment will be at St. James Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers include Hector Soto, Jonathan Soto, Chris Soto, Jaylen Soto, Felipe Borrero and George Flores. Honorary pallbearers include Tommy Bernal, Frank DeLeon and Carney Zambrano.
