Evelyn Jean Barrera, 63, of Gonzales, passed away Monday, June 15, 2018. Evelyn was born Sept. 29, 1954 in Seminole to Lowell Earnest Moore and Barbara Earlene Allen Moore. She married Valdemar M. Barrera on July 25, 1985 in Gonzales.

Evelyn was born and raised in Seminole and graduated with the Seminole High School Class of 1974. Growing up she enjoyed playing with her siblings and neighbors, but even as one of the older girls of the group, Evelyn exhibited her natural ability to take charge, which is a nice way to say she was admittedly bossy when necessary.

Evelyn had worked for Care Inn Nursing and Rehabilitation as the activity director and later as a teacher’s aid at North Avenue Elementary in Gonzales. The last several years Evelyn has worked as a homemaker.

Evelyn loved arts and crafts. She enjoyed making jewelry, quilting, sewing and working with her plants. She delighted in shopping at Hobby Lobby and garden centers. She relished the opportunity to go fishing and camping with Valde. Otherwise, she was perfectly content to stay home and enjoy her hobbies. Some folks might call Evelyn “feisty,” others might remember her as a “mess,” but those are the things that made her Evelyn Jean Barrera, one who’s memory will be treasured.

Evelyn is survived by her loving family, husband, Valdemar M. Barrera; mother, Barbara Earlene Moore Cimental; and step-father, Frank Cimental all of Gonzales; daughter, Katrina LaRae Courtney and husband Ben of Brock; sister, Becky Kidd of Gonzales; step-sisters, Theresa Guillen, Lina Limones, Mary Cimental, and Tracey Quiroz; grandchildren, Sequoyah Courtney of Brock and Takoda Courtney of Brock; and numerous nieces and nephews and great-neices and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her father and brothers, Allen Dale Moore and Leland Earnest Moore.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, June 21 from 10 – 11 a.m. at Seydler-Hill Funeral Home with a funeral to follow at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in the Gonzales Memorial Park Cemetery.
