Emile Louis Fortune, 98, of Victoria, Texas passed away on Friday, Sept. 1, at Whispering Oaks Nursing Center in Cuero, Texas.

Cremation Rites are under the direction of Buffington Funeral Home in Gonzales, Texas. A memorial mass was held on Thursday, Sept. 7, at 10 a.m. at Saint James Catholic Church in Gonzales, Texas with Father Paul Raaz officiating. A rosary was recited at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 7, at Saint James Catholic Church.

Emile was born on July 5, 1919 in Ottine, Texas. He was the son of Dominique Victor and Isabella Louise (Marrou) Fortune. Emile served in the US Army from February6, 1942 until October 25, 1945, during which time he earned the rank of corporal. He fought in the Aleutian Islands campaign and earned the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with one Bronze Battle Star. He married Dorothy Mae Cooley on August 11, 1950 at Saint James Catholic Church in Gonzales, Texas. Emile became a barber after the military, and worked for 45 years until hie retirement, and then he worked another 10 years as a greeter for Wal-Mart. When he was 13 years old, he took on the responsibility of running the family farm. He had a good sense of humor and enjoyed joking around with people and telling stories. He loved children and children loved him because he was a child at heart. He liked to raise vegetables in his garden and picking the fruit and pecans from his trees. He loved his family and was devoted to his wife, Dorothy. Emile played dominoes from childhood until his passing.

Emile is survived by his wife; Dorothy, and one brother; Felix Fortune of Kansas, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; Dominique and Isabella Fortune, five brothers; Leopold Fortune, Hector Fortune, Dominique Fortune, Eloi Fortune, Antoine Fortune, six sisters; Gabrielle Fortune, Alice Fortune, Rosalie Vyoral, Emma Boyd, Jeanne Ellis, and Marie Rabel.
