Elmo Alex Sample

Elmo Alex Sample, age 94, of Smiley, Texas passed away on Sept. 28, 2020. Elmo was born in Sample, Texas on May 3, 1926, as the third of three sons born to Alex H. and Annie May Sample.

Elmo graduated from Smiley High School in 1943 where he was a good athlete and football player. After graduation, he met the love of his life, Jeannine Ann Marquis on a blind date. They fell in love and married on October 7, 1951. One year later their first child Charlotte Jean was born. In 1954 John Alex came, and eight years later in 1962 came Merilyn Gay.

Elmo is survived by his loving family, daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte and Trey McMahon of Nixon; son, John Sample of Waelder; son-in-law, Kennon Cantley of Smiley; grandson, Joseph “Joey” Taylor and wife Kellie of San Antonio and great-granddaughters, Ella and Olivia; grandson, Chad Taylor and wife Brittany of San Antonio, great-grandsons Brooks and Beau, and great-granddaughter, Clair; as well as many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Jeannine Sample; daughter, Merilyn Cantley; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Horace and Bernice Sample, Carl and Annette Sample, and Charles “Chick” and Mary Lou Marquis. There will be a private family graveside service on Saturday, October 3, 2020.
