Election Day is Saturday for Gonzales County residents. A short list of candidates will allow for quick voting for those on-the-go in Gonzales.

Two city council races will be contested. Place 1 pits incumbent Gary Schroeder against Mike Hanson while Place 2 features incumbent Tommy Schurig against Jimmy Kelly.

At the same time and place, the Gonzales Healthcare Systems district election will take place to elect five at-large directors to their governing board.

Polls for both elections will be located at Gonzales North Avenue Intermediate School at 1032 St. Joseph St. from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Voters will need to bring photo identification to cast their ballot.

Meanwhile, Nixon, Smiley and Waelder citizens are asked once again to cast their votes as officials from Nixon-Smiley CISD and Waelder ISD school districts announced dates for the upcoming school board election.

Place 6 is the only contested spot in the Nixon-Smiley CISD school board election. Incumbent Aly Tschoepe will defend her place against Clay Allen. The poll places include Nixon City Hall, 100 W. 3rd St., Nixon (Precincts: 4, 6, 3, 105, 414), Smiley Fire Station, 208 N. FM 108, Smiley (Precinct 10) and Leesville Methodist Church, FM 1682, Leesville (Precincts: 5, 13). Polls will be open from 7 a.m. – 7 p.m.

There are three expiring terms in the Waelder ISD school board election. They are JoAnn Ibarra, Denis Lee Goode and Cathy Hernandez. Candidates on the ballot include Adolph Gonzales, Denis Lee Goode, Catrina G. Hernandez, Sarah Hinkle Ward and JoAnn Ibarra. Voters must head to the Waelder Community Center on 300 Hwy. 90 W. The polls are open 7 a.m. – 7 p.m.

Since WISD elections are “at large,” the three candidates with the most votes win, meaning winners do not require a majority or over 50 percent of the votes. All terms are for three years.

The Gonzales ISD school board canceled their elections due to unopposed seats.
