Nixon, Smiley and Waelder citizens are asked once again to cast their votes as officials from Nixon-Smiley CISD and Waelder ISD school districts announced dates for the upcoming school board election.

Place 6 is the only contested spot in the Nixon-Smiley CISD school board election. Incumbent Aly Tschoepe will defend her place against Clay Allen.

Early voting takes place at Nixon-Smiley CISD Administration Building at 800 N. Ranch Rd. Those wanting to cast their vote in person can do so during the early voting period from 7:45 a.m. – 4 p.m. beginning April 23 and ending May 1.

On Election Day, May 5, the poll places include Nixon City Hall, 100 W. 3rd St., Nixon (Precincts: 4, 6, 3, 105, 414), Smiley Fire Station, 208 N. FM 108, Smiley (Precinct 10) and Leesville Methodist Church, FM 1682, Leesville (Precincts: 5, 13). Polls will be open from 7 a.m. – 7 p.m.

There are three expiring terms in the Waelder ISD school board election. They are JoAnn Ibarra, Denis Lee Goode and Cathy Hernandez.

Candidates on the ballot include Adolph Gonzales, Denis Lee Goode, Catrina G. Hernandez, Sarah Hinkle Ward and JoAnn Ibarra.

Early voting takes place at Waelder ISD, 201 Hwy. 90 W. from April 23-27, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. and again from April 30-May 1 from 7 a.m. – 7 p.m.

On Election Day, voters must head to the Waelder Community Center on 300 Hwy. 90 W. The polls are open 7 a.m. – 7 p.m.

Since WISD elections are “at large,” the three candidates with the most votes win, meaning winners do not require a majority or over 50 percent of the votes. All terms are for three years.

The Gonzales ISD school board canceled their elections due to unopposed seats.
