Douglas James Raeke, 61, of Cost, passed away Thursday, Dec. 26, 2019. He was born on Oct. 10, 1958 in Los Angeles, Calif., where he spent a very full and happy childhood with his parents, James Walter and Sue Ann Ivey Raeke, and his big sister, Linda.

Throughout his life, Doug was extremely fortunate and privileged to have been raised as a Christian by his parents. As a child, Doug enjoyed going to the Esplanade and walking down the long pathway to the neighborhood beach below. He was determined to find that “special spot” in the sand to spend the day with his family and a packed lunch, playing in the sand with his army shovel. Together, they later moved to Robstown, Texas to join in on the family’s business, KROB Radio Station, and spend time creating many memories with his grandparents.

Falling into his father’s footsteps, Doug felt strong loyalty to his country and his flag, and enlisted in the United States Army in 1978. After serving and being honorably discharged, he then went on to join the National Guard. He later came back to Texas to be near his parents on the Raeke Twin Oaks Ranch and became an electrical lineman for the Union in Houston. He was able to travel and perform his services throughout places such as: Texas, California, New Mexico and Colorado. Doug was adaptive and strong, and anytime an electrical line went down, in any type of inclement weather, he was there in his line truck, ready to climb poles and restore power to the community.

Doug also enjoyed hunting, riding his horses, and fishing in the family’s stocked catfish tanks. He liked tinkering on automobiles, but most of all he loved his Harley Davidson, and took many good road trips in and out of the state. He spent lots of his time working on his bike, while visiting with his good and supportive friend and neighbor, Bobby Urich. They shared a common interest in automobiles and motorcycles, and the two mutually appreciated each other’s company.

Doug is survived by his sister, Linda Porter of San Marcos, and stepdaughter, Amanda Bonee of Hallettsville. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services for Doug were held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2020 in the Monthalia Methodist Church with Reverend Paul Smith officiating.
