Diana Sue Cooper Harris

Diana Sue Cooper Harris, 75, of Gonzales, passed away Sunday, Jan. 20, 2019, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was still dancing and singing in her living room to Elvis Presley and Patsy Cline just a short time before her death.

Sue was born Sept. 4, 1943. She graduated from Flatonia High School in 1962 and attended Southwest Texas State College. In 1963, she married Herman Earl Harris of Waelder. They were married for 52 years and raised their three daughters in Gonzales.

Sue and Herman owned Sue’s Sound Shop on St. Louis St. in Gonzales from 1976 to 1991. The store was special to many people from every background and walk of life. It was a place known throughout the area—where Sue could locate any hard-to-find song or album a customer needed—sometimes only by one line of the song’s lyrics. She knew music of every genre, and she catered to local and regional musicians like George Strait, who bought his guitar strings there in the early years of his career.

Sue’s cooking was also unmatched, especially her chicken-fried steak and peach and lemon pies. She shared Herman’s love of animals and gardening, and she spoiled her grandchildren.

She was happiest on a sawdust dance floor, and she and Herman spent many a Saturday night there, dancing to their favorite bands, like the Velvets or the Moods.

She’s at peace now with her lord and savior, Jesus Christ. Sue is survived by her three daughters and their families, who will miss her feisty spirit and penchant for making us all laugh: Donna Harris Urbanovsky and Steve Urbanovsky of Caldwell with children Kate and Kelly Urbanovsky; Kathy Harris and Ryan Ripp of Colorado with son McIntyre Harris Ripp; and Hope Harris Mills and Jimmy Mills of Gonzales with children Dylan and Taylor Mills.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her mother and stepfather Elizabeth and Arvil Hart, her father Charles E. Cooper, and her brother Charles Cooper.

A graveside service will be held 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25 in the Saturn Cemetery with Pastor Andy Smith officiating. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church. Services are under the care and direction of Seydler-Hill Funeral Home.
