GONZALES — Career United States Army veteran and lifelong Gonzales resident David Tucy has been named the new Gonzales County Veterans Service Officer.

Tucy was named to the position in July, and has been the veterans officer since July 23.

“I applied a number of months ago for the position, but I didn’t get the job,” Tucy said. “Then I saw in your paper [The Gonzales Inquirer] that the position had come open again, so I applied for it once more but this time I got the job.

“I couldn’t be happier to serve again,” he said. “I’ve been thinking for a number of years that I wanted to help our veterans out so when this came along, it was an answer to what I was looking for.”

Tucy spent 23 years in the Army, primarily in food services.

“I started as a cook, but by the time I left the Army, I was an inspector,” Tucy said. “I have used that experience all my life.

“After I got out of the Army, I was in food services at The Heights senior care center. I even started having monthly breakfasts for the veterans in the facility, and I’d invite first responders and other veterans to come out and swap stories. The Boy Scouts even came out and presented the colors to open the breakfast.”

Tucy is excited and honored to the be the county veterans officer.

“I really want all veterans in Gonzales to call me and find out all the benefits that are available to them,” Tucy said. “There is so much health care available, along with information on pensions, burial/headstone info, survivor benefits—and so much more. Most veterans are surprised as to what can be available to them. There is even a meals benefit to veterans.

“I think people who have served don’t believe they need all the benefits they have coming, or else they think the benefits should go to someone more in need,” Tucy said. “I’d like to talk to everyone, whether young or old, to discuss what is available and how we might be able to help.”

Tucy said he has not yet heard from any of the female veterans of Gonzales County, and he encourages them to get in touch with his office too.

The veterans office is located at 414 St. Joseph Street in Suite 105. Office hours are Tuesday/Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Thursday from 8 a.m. to noon.

Tucy also holds office hours at the county annex in Nixon on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month from 8 a.m. to noon.

The office number is 830-672-3244.
