Dannie Schellenberg, 88, of Harwood, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 10. Dannie was born Jan. 17, 1929 in Gonzales County to Otto W. Schellenberg and Millie Knesek Schellenberg. He married Joyce Marie Edwards on Feb. 5, 1950 in Gonzales. Dannie was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Dannie grew up on a farm in Gonzales County, he attended the Porter Country School until his brother Louie was killed in the Korean War and Dannie was obliged to leave school after the tenth grade to help on the family farm. Early in his life Danny worked in the rice fields and helped Johnny Haschke work his corn fields. Dannie worked as a mechanic for Buster Fortune’s Massey Ferguson Dealership. Later he worked in the oil fields with Dill Tank Company and Alexander Tank Company. Dannie did some custom hay baling and cut thousands of cords of fire wood as well. He built a large tank on his property and stocked it with fish allowing folks to fish and pay by the pound of fish they took home. Dannie raised pecans and taught himself to graft trees to improve the quality and production of his pecan harvest. He grew Irish potatoes and sweet potatoes, dewberries, peanuts and persimmons for market. Dannie loved working the land, he was a natural outdoorsman. He loved to coon hunt and the tales of his hunts are legendary. But there was more to Dannie than being a hard worker and outdoorsman. He was a family man that enjoyed taking trips with his wife and children, watching his grandchildren grow and start families of their own and enjoying domino and homemade ice cream parties with friends. Dannie could be ornery at times, but sooner than later his huge welcoming smile always brightened the day. His faith was strong but personal to Dannie, he faced many struggles in his life and knew that whether he was in a rice field, corn field, oil field or pecan orchard, his Lord was right there beside him, truly his blessed assurance.

Dannie Schellenberg is survived by his loving wife of nearly 68 years, Joyce Marie Schellenberg of Harwood, daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and H.C. “Bubba” Schmidt Jr. of Gonzales, son and daughter-n-law, Dale and Sherri Schellenberg of Gonzales, sister, Annie Rabel of Seguin, brother, Herbert Schellenberg of Harwood, grandchildren, Stacy Harding (Darren) of New Braunfels, H.C.
