Community yard sale labeled a success

The second annual Gonzales Main Street city-wide yard sale on Saturday April 14 was deemed a success by participants in spite of windy and inclement weather early in the morning.

But by mid-morning the sun had come out, the weather warmed up, and more participants and shoppers descended on Confederate Square.

“The wind was a slight problem early this morning when we were setting up,” said Main Street Director Barbara Friedrich. “Some overnight rain didn’t help matters but we have sold a bunch of our stuff and our vendors appear happy.”

Suzanne Sexton, one vendor who was selling a lot of merchandise specializing in Christmas ornaments and decorations, labeled the event as “fabulous.”

“I think it is a great event that Main Street puts on,” Sexton said. “We’ve sold a lot of our stuff, and my kids and I are having a lot of fun.”

Located close to the Sexton booth was Pastor Jesse Elizondo of the Two Rivers Bible Church.

The church was selling a variety of items, with the hope of raising enough money to help former pastor Charlie Matlock currently doing missionary work in the Amazon jungle area of Peru.

According to Pastor Jesse, Matlock had a calling to go to Peru to try and help young girls who were being used in sex trafficking. They have opened a house in Peru, and the church currently has 12 girls they have rescued and who are staying in the home.

“It’s really sad what is happening down there,” Pastor Jesse stated. “Prostitution, brothels, drugs, illegal gold mining—it’s leading to the sales of young girls as young as seven to make income for the families down there.”

Pastor Jesse said there are local Gonzales people going down to Peru this summer to help out Pastor Matlock, and he promised to keep the Inquirer informed about their efforts in the jungles of Peru.

Besides vendors on the square, local businesses held large sidewalk sales up and down the main streets, with shoppers snatching up items all over the place.

“It was a good day in spite of the weather,” Friedrich summed up at the end of the day.
