City approves donation of land for historical markers at council meeting

At its regular meeting on Thursday, August 13, 2020, the Gonzales City Council further addressed the controversy around Confederate Square, known officially as Jail Square.

Comments were heard from prospective Gonzales High School Freshman Peyton Moore, who said that while he feels the square should not be known as Confederate Square, it should not have its name changed. It should remain Jail Square and be popularized as such, Moore said, in order to maintain the historical asset's accuracy. Following a presentation from Preservation Gonzales, a 501c-3 represented by David Tucy, Glenda Gordon and Quincy Johnson ahead of the meeting, the council voted to approve a donation of land in the Square to be occupied by the historical markers which have been proposed by the committee.

Gonzales' first semi-pro soccer team, the Steel Cannons, also gave comments at the meeting, thanking the city for its support in the team's founding and development.

Other agenda items which were addressed at the meeting include:

  • Budget amendments for the 2020-2021 fiscal year, as well as the voter-approval tax rate for that budget.
  • Approval for City Manager Tim Patek to enter into a grant writing agreement with Gonzales Main Street director Liz Reiley, for a grant offered by the department of Agriculture totaling $500,000.
  • Receipt of update on district cleanups from City Manager Tim Patek.
